INTRODUCTION
Kargil, the western part of Ladakh, is one of the coldest inhabited places on the globe. Earlier it was part of Jammu and Kashmir state and currtly it is second largest district of the Union Territory of Ladakh. It lies in the northeast of Kashmir at an altitude of 9,000 feet, with a population of approximately 2.50 lakh. Despite its rich cultural heritage, the region remains underdeveloped, primarily due to poor accessibility. The Srinagar-Kargil highway, the only means of connectivity with the rest of the world, remains cut off for six months during winter due to heavy snowfall.
About us
With the aim of uplifting this landlocked region,
A visionary local cleric, Late Hujjatul-Islam Wal-Muslimin Sheikh Mohd Mufeed (r.a), laid the foundation of the first socio-religious organization of the region—Jamiat Ulama Isna Asharia Kargil (JUIAK)—in 1954. Since its inception, the organization has tirelessly worked for the upliftment and development of the district in all walks of life. It has consistently voiced the needs of the region, advocating for the opening of the Zojila Tunnel and establishing civil air services.
Contributions and Leadership
Over the years, JUIAK was led by distinguished scholars and clerics who significantly contributed to its growth and development
